EWAD was founded in April 1995 by a group of women who were inspired by love and compassion to fight for the rights of women, youth and children in Wakiso, Entebbe.

Over the past decade, EWAD has grown from an informal community organization to a well established charitable organization in Uganda.

In June 2011, the organization officially changed its name from Entebbe Women’s Association (EWA) to the Environmental Women in Action for Development (EWAD); this change reflects the organization’s evolution into an environmentally-focused, with emphasis on environmental stewardship and sustainability.
